We spent the weekend camping at the Great Sand Dunes near Alamosa. It was a great way to start our summer break! The only pictures I have are from our day at the dunes... the time at our campsite was made up mostly of trying to control the temper tantrums of our two boys. Yikes. But I'm going to focus on how AMAZING the dunes are for kids!!
This creek only runs for a small part of the summer, and I can't imagine visiting the dunes without it there. It was the perfect temperature and perfect depth for small kids (and adults). The sand was soft, there were always sand toys within arms' reach, and the sun was shining. It was so much fun!
This shows Gus standing in the deepest water of the day... up to a 2 year-old's ankle. Just right!
Both boys had a great day.
I'm pretty sure George could have lived there. He was constantly digging, building, working, planning, running, concentrating, and smiling.
I vaguely remember being at the Dunes as a kid, but I didn't remember much. I just love how the Dunes are surrounded by the enormous Sangre de Cristo mountains. It was gorgeous.
My parents' friends, the Swansons, were with us for the trip as well. Their grandchildren (who were not constantly throwing fits at the campground) were fun for George to play with. This is Merrick, who loved building with George.
Gus took a relaxed approach to digging.
On our way out of town, we stopped at a "World Famous" gator farm. George and I even held a baby alligator. Don't the boys look thrilled?!
All in all, there were some good parts (the Dunes) and some frustrating parts (everything else). We're camping again in a few weeks so hopefully it will be a little better. But I am very grateful for the great memories that were made with my boys at the Great Sand Dunes!
